Slovenia Gerbics

Last updated Sept. 11, 2007

---------------------------------------------

This Gerbic was found by Tommy Gerbic.  I can't get all the pictures to copy only the head shot.  From what I can judge and from Tommy's limited Slovenian it seems that Irena has won a beauty contest.  The pictures all seem to be farm related, maybe a "farmers daughter" competition?  Anyway here is the link, if anyone has more info on this please notify me.  http://www.lepo2007.com/LePO/fote/finale.php

Irena Gerbic

Tommy writes "the first word means Venus, so like the Ms Venus Slovenia.  Looks like a TV show.    The biggest thing to me is no Caron over the C which means pronounced as we say Ger-Bik not Ger-Bitch as Goran and Matty do."

Dr. Benjamin Ipavec (1839-1908) was, artistically, the most important member of the family and, with Anton Foerster and Fran Gerbic, is counted in the leading trio of Slovenian romantic composers. He lived in Graz and, for many years, was head physician in a childrens hospital.

This is from Goran Gerbic, December 2000

"As you will see from our family tree my great-grandfather was born near
Trieste as well. Before World War II family fled further east to
Maribor, which is near Austrian border.  My father was born there in 1939. He has
a younger brother who lives in Ljubljana and sister who unfortunately
already died. As far I know we are the only Gerbic's in Slovenia by the
information in telephone books on Internet."

"I was born in 1965 in Maribor but moved to Ljubljana to study
mechanical engineering, where I married 5 years ago. I have two small daughters  2
and 4 years old."

"Christmas season is very traditional in Slovenia as well starting
beginning of December with St. Nicholaus and ending 2nd of January. We
have public holidays on 25th in 26th of December and then 1st and 2nd of
January so many of us combine these holidays with some days off so we can spend
almost 10 days at home or traveling.  There are many opportunities for
short trips in Slovenia because it's so small. From Ljubljana which is
located at center there is maximum of 3 hours drive to reach any corner
of Slovenia. And there is lot to visit."

"Since I enjoy skiing very much I look forward to winter season. Ski
slopes are very near (less than half hour drive) and almost everybody goes
there.  My other hobby is horseback riding and my wife is now taking lessons in
riding as well."

"I've traveled several times to USA for business reasons and I've been
to California as well traveling by car from LA to Las Vegas and then to
San Francisco."

"I'll forward your mail to my mother who is very interested to contact you
as well. She is retired and lives in Maribor."

"Best Regards,

Goran"

New letter from Goran's cousin Matej,

Hello Susan!

First of all i'd like to say that my english is not quite good, so.....
Ok, let's get to the point. The person you contacted with (Goran) is my
cosoin and his dad (Dimitrij) in my uncle. We (me, brother&hih wife and
our parents) live nearby Ljubljana. I study food science & technology.
By the way. My name is Matej, that "j" at the end spells like "y", and
english translation of my name would be Mathew (I think) (like one of
the apostols). So for my brother, his name is Jernej, my fathers name is
Aleš (read as Alesh), and my mother Vidojka (the same thing with J)
So, I've made some check agout those places you said that theyir names
souded like gerbich....haven't found any yet.

I have some pictures of me... and my brother. On picture, called "Beci
2" is me and my pet, called Beci, interrupted douring supper. On picture
"hribi 2"is me on a mountain trip. And there is another picture
"Grintovci-Aljažev dom" , my brother is on the left.

And now I'm about to see your homepage. If you have any questions....go
agead.

That's all for now. See you.
