Hi, my name is John Gerbic. My Grandfather emigrated from the “old” Jugoslavia to New Zealand in early 1900s. Do you have relatives that moved to US at a similar time? Thanks.

Regards.  John

I responded right away, but as of today (Nov. 29, 2007) I haven't heard anything back from John.

Computed mediated conferencing (CMC) into asynchronous form, offers potential benefits for learning through its text based nature and space and time to reflect. The project investigates student approaches to learning (deep surface) and learning strategies, in this environment. The research is sited in a degree course where flexible learning models are available for n campus students. The relationship between CMC and face-to-face activity in terms of student learning will be a part of the research. The project takes a student perspective, which is explored through a case study design.

Progress for business education

Philippa Gerbic Five years after introducing the Bachelor of Business at AIT, the Commerce Faculty is now offering an Honours programme and planning, in 1999 to introduce a Masters degree course.

More than 1000 students are enrolled in the Bachelor of Business programme says its leader Philippa Gerbic. "Our aim is to introduce a variety of options for our students. The Bachelor of Business offers seven majors, and students are encouraged to study double majors in their areas of interest."

As a result, she says more than 60% of students have chosen to complete a double major.

"We see our graduates as having capabilities in two business areas."

Students spend the first 18 months of the four year degree studying business fundamentals then choose which majors to focus on during the remaining five semesters. This includes a semester of study in a business organisation where student tackle real business problems and issues.

In addition, students are also increasingly opting to study for international business and the programme has students currently studying at Rennes, France and Humberside, Hull in the UK. International study is a requirement for an international business major and students spend one or two semesters overseas in either a university or in a co-operative education placement.

Finally, the Honours programme provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate excellence - and employers recognise this when hiring new staff, says Philippa Gerbic.

Jason Gerbic grandson of Petar Grbic. Jason changed his name to Gerbic only a couple years ago. He was living in New Zealand and now resides in Australia with wife Stephanie and child Claudia (born 2003).  Petar Grbic moved from Croatia about 1940 to South Africa.  Petar was the eldest of about 7 kids and his youngest brother, Boris Grbic emigrated to Sydney Australia maybe 40 or 50 years ago.

Jason Gerbic
Freelance jewellery designer and manufacturer

Introducing yourself as a jeweller from South Africa is just like telling people you’re a cheese-maker from Holland or a chocolate-maker from Belgium, says Jason.

You’re basically regarded as one of the best in the world at what you do.
And that reputation definitely helped Jason get a foot in the door, when he arrived in New Zealand five years ago, with his wife Stephanie.

“I did my apprenticeship in Johannesburg - you have to do between three and five years before you can do the trade test and get your jeweller’s certificate - and then immigrated here, fresh out of training,” recalls the 31-year-old.

“I quickly found a job in the city at Jewelers Workshop and was the second South African jeweller to be employed there at that time.”

Jason worked there for three years, before leaving to pursue a solo career as a contemporary jewellery designer and manufacturer.

“Concentrating on private work means I can put all my energy into my own designs and it’s a lot better than doing work for other jewellers and having to work to their guidelines.

“That kind of restricts your creativity,” says Jason, who is now based in a studio at the back of his garage, in Meadowbank.

He has sold his pieces through upmarket fashion and design stores around town, but his biggest client is leading New Zealand fashion designer, Karen Walker.

You don’t have to tell Jason that it’s quite a coup having such a major fashion force as Karen Walker commission your jewellery.

He says it came about after a friend, who was in the recruitment industry for the rag trade, asked him if he would like to put something in her annual Christmas newsletter to clients.

“So I made up a little letter, saying: ‘Hi my name is Jason, I’m a jeweller etc’. My friend probably sent it out to about 50 people, and the only person that got back to me was Karen.

“Not bad for a first hit!” he smiles.

“And she’s such a nice lady as well. I’ve been doing work for her for a couple of years now, making things like earrings, pendants and brooches and I’m starting to make her belt buckles too.”

Lately, he’s been making wooden jewellery to complement Karen’s new clothing range, titled ‘Wood’.

These jewellery pieces have been featured in New Zealand magazine, Pavement, as well as UK magazines, Vogue and Face, through stories on Karen Walker.

“The articles don’t necessarily name me as the jewellery designer, but it’s pretty good exposure to have pictures of your work in international publications.”

Jason says that if he had stayed in South Africa, he doesn’t think he would have been as excited about the jewellery industry, as he is about it here.
“New Zealand is right up there in terms of design and fashion.

“It’s a big jewellery society here, everybody wears it, whereas in South Africa, a lot of people were too scared to wear their jewellery.”

In the next few years, Jason plans to open his own shop in Auckland.

Hillman, Deborah Arts (non Entertainment)
Photographer www.deborahhillman.com

I was born and raised in Auckland. My father is from England, and my mother's family is Croatian. My uncle, Fred Gerbic, was New Zealand's first MP of Croatian descent. I did my schooling at Diocesan, before studying Marketing and Japanese at the Auckland University. In the last year of my Bachelor's degree, I went on spent two months in Japan on a scholarship from Japan Air Lines and just loved it there.
So, after graduating, I took a position teaching English in a small Japanese town that just happened to be the sister city of One Tree Hill! After returning to NZ, I completed a Masters in Japanese, before coming to the US in 1991. I have lived in LA since 1995.
I have since discovered my artistic side, and I am now working as a photographer in LA, shooting headshots, portraits, weddings, events, products, and architecture. I really enjoy taking photos. I have also discovered graphic design and I am learning how to make my own website at the moment. One day it would be great to combine my two passions: photography and Japanese.

Mr. G Woodcock gave evidence of his involvement with the Onehunga Labour Party over a substantial period and confirmed that while the late Mr. Fred Gerbic was the Labour Party MP for Onehunga, he used part of the hall as an electorate office, rent being paid for the use of the hall by Parliamentary Services. Income raised was used to pay the outgoings on the hall, including maintenance. Mr. Woodcock confirmed that all decisions relating to the hall were made by the Labour Party in Onehunga. He always understood that David Isbey was holding the property on behalf of the Labour Party members in the Onehunga electorate. He estimated that in 1996 there were between 200 and 300 paid up members, excluding affiliate members.
