Letter from Verna Gerbic (Widow of Edward Jr.) June 27, 1997
"Dear Susan, I am sorry to be so long in getting back to you in response to your letter and interesting project of tracing Gerbic family roots. Even more I regret that I can be of no help to you whatsoever knowing so little about my dear late husbands Gerbic history as he didn't either except that his father Edward was born in Bucyrus, Ohio and to his knowledge had no surviving family that ever came to visit or he them. Except that his real ancestry was Gerbig not Gerbic and coming here originally from Saxony Germany. in his early school day during World War I he was advised to change his name from Gerbig to Gerbic because of great adversity toward Germans in Milwaukee his hometown."
"In all our long marriage of 62 years and 5 years of College courtship did we come upon another Gerbic even in the huge Manhattan telephone book during our residency there or in Florida, new Jersey or any of our other homes. Through we found many Gerbigs in Germany during our frequent visits there on business or pleasure. "
"Most important it is a complete mystery to me how you ever came to have our Peter Gerbic of PA or his eldest daughter Celina of Boston on your roster. You see Peter is our son by adoption from his earliest baby and with no roots whatsoever in the East before that."
"It would be nice even at my advanced age to find some relations my late very dear husband Edward on his side as he certainly would have. And our Peter who loved his father deeply would also be."
"Wishing you the best of success in your family search"
"With sincere regrets, Verna Gerbic"

From another letter by Verna Gerbic dated Sept. 26th 1997
"He (Edward Sr.) was born in Sandusky, Ohio and when we once drove back with him to Milwaukee from New Jersey when he had visited us he again lamented the fact that he had no family whatsoever to stop and see only a few old friends and that his son Edward had no uncles, aunts, cousins whatsoever like his wife was so blessed with."
"In retrospect in further thought my husbands father Ed had been briefly remarried after widowed for a long time to someone named Laura who would have taken his name. They met in Florida I believe. We met her only a few times since we were always away. All I know to our concerns she had taken him to California where he died quite suddenly a shock to us....Having seen or not known her little before except Laura, this might be a clue for you."
